Use your fingers, needle-nose pliers or a small flat-head screwdriver to lift the tab slightly. If this tab does not come into contact with the bottom of the light bulb, the lamp will not work. Replace a light bulb, plug the touch lamp into the outlet and check its function. If the lamp fails to come on, you'll need to check the socket wiring. Remove the light bulb and unplug the lamp. Unscrew the finial and lift the lamp shade off the lamp harp. Find the metal sleeves at the bottom of the harp on each side of the socket.
Slide the sleeves up the harp as you squeeze the sides of the harp together. This releases the harp from the harp saddle beneath the socket. Grab the outside sleeve on the socket with your hand. Pull the sleeve from the socket base. You may need to wiggle the sleeve as you pull, so it releases from the base. Check the lamp wires to ensure they connect to the two terminal screws on the socket.
Loosen the terminal screws, wrap the lamp wires around the terminals and tighten the screws if the wires were loose or disconnected. Reassemble the touch lamp and install the light bulb. Plug the lamp into an outlet and check its operation. Replace the touch control inside the lamp base if the touch lamp still fails to light. Unplug the lamp and remove the bottom from the lamp base to expose the touch control. Size, form and composition affect levels of capacitance. The human body has a different capacitance from a touch lamp, and the human body and touch lamp together have a different capacitance than either one individually.
The circuits wired into touch lamps have the ability to detect these changes in capacitance, so when you touch a touch lamp, the circuit activates the electrical switch. When you take your hand away, the lamp goes back to its original capacitance so that it will be ready to detect the next change in capacitance and activate the electrical switch again. Many touch lamps can emit light in multiple brightness settings without the benefit of three-way light bulbs.
