Why does the jury find Tom guilty? What role does Calpurnia play in the family and in the novel? Having her in my life makes me want to be a better person. I am proud to call my mom my role…. Mothers inspire children to achieve any goal placed on them; my mother is no exception. They are the foundation of the millions of children in the world, who look to find support in a being that we call, mom. Although the journey is not always perfect, I, like many other individuals, am forever grateful for the mother that raised me.

When I was younger, I was bowlegged, my mother thought it was best to deal with the situation now, rather than live a difficult life full of ridicules and challenges. At the age of two, my mother made the hardest decision any mother could make; send their child away to deal with a medical situation.

My private school was predominately black including the teachers and staff. Even my cousins, who went to the same school, sounded different. When we are all together with our parents and grandparents, I notice that most of them talked with an Ebonics accent but I could understand them except for my uncles and older cousins because their accents are really thick.

Mom later explained how I would read based off of the illustrations because that was the way I was taught in kindergarten. Mom explained to Mrs. Bolmer, that it was very hard for them to help me with my homework because they hardly knew any English and they had no idea how they could help me learn correctly. Bolmer then found a better solution to my problem. She gave me two recorded tapes, with flashcards.

So I could read the flashcard while I listened to the pronunciations off the recorded…. In 3rd grade my teacher noticed I had trouble with reading comprehension, so she gave me the first Harry Potter book with a read along tape. Also, school supplies were another problem that intervened with their studies, due to the fact that they did not have all these supplies they barely took any notes.

When I was their age, in America I would always take notes in school, so when I get home my dad and I would revise over them. Seeing Calpurnia in relation to the African-American community makes Scout realize for the first time that Cal actually continues to exist when she's not at the Finch house:. That Calpurnia led a modest double life never dawned on me.

The idea that she had a separate existence outside our household was a novel one, to say nothing of her having command of two languages. So now Scout is curious, and she peppers Calpurnia with basic questions like when her birthday is she doesn't actually know, not even the year and where she grew up near Finch's Landing. But while Cal shares the basic facts of her life, we don't learn how she feels about them.

Does she miss her childhood home? Was she happy there? Did she leave family members behind? What does she do on her days off? Scout does learn to see Calpurnia as a real person over the course of the novel, but it's still an open question: how much does the novel give Calpurnia a real identity, and how much does it just push her into the role of wise black woman? Study Guide. By Harper Lee. Previous Next. Calpurnia Tough Love Sure, everyone in the novel is filtered through Scout's perception. But we get the sense that Calpurnia in particular is colored by Scout's perspective—and her perspective sounds a little like Cinderella thinking about her wicked stepmother : She was all angles and bones; she was nearsighted; she squinted; her hand was wide as a bed slat and twice as hard.
