I don't remember if this came up in the book or not, but in the GoF movie, after the boys are transported to the graveyard and Harry's scar begins to burn, Cedric is genuinely concerned for Harry. Then, during Priori Incantatem, Cedric helps Lily and James and others in the book buy Harry time to get back to the portkey.
He was loyal, true, kind, and fair. He was definitely "unafraid of toil", as the song goes. True he was smart and brave and ambitious, but his actions and his reasoning behind those actions totally fall in line with everything Helga Hufflepuff valued and wanted in her House.
You gotta be careful when talking about Hogwarts Houses not to assume that a Hufflepuff can't be brave, or a Slytherin can't be smart, or a Ravenclaw can't be cunning. Most people have a mix of traits. Students are not limited by their houses. Not at all.

Well he fell right into my trap so I wouldn't call him clever.
Voldemort: He was clever enough to save Harry and also he was brave enough to stand in front of wormtail and you. Actually, I think he wasn't quite sure what was going on and died in the confusion. Anyway, he was braver than clever there. He might have found himself wishing to be in Hufflepuff, his decision also influences the Sorting Hat. Add a comment. Active Oldest Votes. Oh come on, compared to Crabbe, Goyle, Harry, Ron, and pretty much every other character you'd be hard pressed to argue that Diggory wasn't in the top 25th percentile of intellect and curiosity.
Sorry, I've downvoted because I think this is actively wrong. It's demonstrable many times over that a person's House is indicative only of their most prominent attributes or personality traits.
Hermione is almost certainly the smartest student in her year, but isn't in Ravenclaw because her boldness, bravery and integrity is more important to her than a mere pursuit of knowledge which characteries Ravenclaws. It's more about values than ability. If he doesn't value intelligence then he's not a ravenclaw, regardless of iq. TheGiantofLannister -- I think if there's to be talk about fairplay, Cedric Diggory, and Hufflepuff, let's be honest here: It's convenient to ignore that Cedric gave Harry a riddle about the golden egg while Harry had outright told Cedric that the first task was going to be dragons, that there was a dragon for each of the champions, and that they would have to get by the dragon.
Cedric gave Harry the password to the prefects' bath and told him the hot water would "help him think. Show 4 more comments. The before-match-handshake differs from those with Slytherin, when they try to crush each others hand: The Captains walked up to each other and shook hands; Diggory smiled at Wood but Wood now looked as though he had lockjaw and merely nodded. Really thorough and nice answer! Slytherincess I do appreciate it from somebody, who sets the standards of an answer really high: — quapka.
It's disappointing that this is not the accepted answer because it is more correct than axelwchan's which ignores the subtlety of the Sorting Hat's decisions and the House traits.
An eccentric type who, according to Newt himself, is found annoying by most people, the famed magizoologist is a rare and unlikely hero. As a Hufflepuff, Newt is bunched in with the house that are often deemed to be inferior to the other houses.
The two come across a Time-Turner and attempt to undo the death of Cedric Diggory, the famed Hufflepuff Quidditch captain who died at the Triwizard Tournament in his sixth year at Hogwarts. After several failed attempts at rescuing him, the mischievous duo actually ends up turning Cedric into a Death Eater in an alternative timeline.
In the world of Harry Potter as we know it, there are no recorded instances of a person who was sorted into Hufflepuff ever becoming a Death Eater, or any other kind of Dark Wizard for that matter. Hufflepuff was a close second. Despite not being ambitious enough for Slytherin, clever enough for Ravenclaw or brave enough for Gryffindor, the loyalty of Hufflepuff students compelled them to fight alongside their fellow pupils to defend the Castle.
In that respect, Hufflepuff were the real driving force behind the Battle of Hogwarts; whereas Gryffindor fought for Harry and glory, Hufflepuff fought for what they knew was right.
Harry was brave enough to publicly reveal the return of Lord Voldemort, and although many people thought that he was spouting nonsense, Professor Sprout awarded twenty points to Gryffindor because Harry passed her a watering can. A Metamorphmagus, Tonks was able to shapeshift at will, which got her into a lot of trouble at Hogwarts, as she regularly took on the appearance of her professors for a laugh. This, combined with instances such as Hannah Abbott believing that she was too stupid to sit her O.
Again, it is usually their loyalty that compels them to do the right thing, highlighting the fact that they are the most selfless of Hogwarts students. A true hero, Tonks played an essential role in defeating Lord Voldemort while never wavering on what made her a Hufflepuff. He quickly realizes that Harry had been knocked off his broom by Dementors and immediately offers to void the match in the interest of fair play.
For example, the reason the match was between Gryffindor and Hufflepuff in the first place was because Slytherin pulled out, with Draco Malfoy claiming that his arm had been injured by the hippogriff Buckbeak, despite being visibly fine. During the Triwizard Tournament, most of the students in Hogwarts turned against Harry. Who is the most famous Ravenclaw? Was Cho Chang jealous of Hermione? Who does Cho Chang marry?
